Yuletide Madness! So, Yuletide Madness is open! I actually managed to write a little something for someone. It's so painfully obvious that I feel like offering ficlets or something to people who CAN'T figure out what I wrote. :) I thought about doing something else, but it's 5am, so maybe tomorrow if we don't have too much running around to do. |

Ho, Ho, Ho; Bah, Humbug; Happy Festivus This is the perfect time of the year to spend quality moments with friends and family (if one wishes too) as well as let your flist know how much they mean to you. That goes without saying; if I read you and/or interact with you, you're golden. But let us not forget the other timeless ritual that should, nay, must, be celebrated as we wave goodbye to 2009 and begin the steep trudge into 2010. ( Gather ye 'round the Festivus pole and get stuff off your chest ) |

Posted via mobile email Okay, home now for 2nd time from hospital. Sent home with tons of anti nausea meds and fever and pain meds. Mom was nearly hysterical on phone while I was hospitalized so definitely have to find energy to travel out there tomorrow for holiday, so she can see I'm still alive if not 100%. Dad showing his worry by calling me 20 times a day, asking me what I can eat/drink, what I want him to get from store, etc. Also got yelled at when I apologized for not getting anyone Christmas presents yet - was told 'that wasn't important and to forget about it'. So now going to try some yummy soup broth (/sarcasm) and then take a bath while admiring all my bruises from the IVs. And being watched by Velcro Cats. As always, feel free to text me (9174025963) or email me on my cell (thedancingferret@tmomail.net). Happy Holidays and *hugs* to all. Posted via mobile email I'm putting off calling the debt collector until tomorrow - between having a bad pain day and worrying about paying other bills, I'm having enough stress today.
And speaking of bills, a huge, immensely grateful THANK YOU to those of you who sent me messages last night amongst other things. It was completely unexpected but so very, very much appreciated *hugs*
To distract myself tonight, I plan on burying myself in SGA Big Bang fics. So feel free to comment with your favorites (and why, if you're so inclined) below, so I'll know which to definitely check out. Take care and thanks again *hugs* |

it's amazing, and it's wonderful, but it's huge... So... Yuletide this year for me has not been about fretting about finishing the story for my recipient and then pinch-hits and writing Treats, as it has been in past years, but instead this year, it has been about fretting about finishing the story for my recipient (*grin*) and then putting in extra hours wrangling fandom tags. What this means is when an author uploads a work into the Archive of Our Own, they can tag it with whatever they like, and the tag wranglers look through great big bins of unwrangled tags, and then figure out which of them mean the same thing as each other (synonyms) and also what "common" tags there are (you may see tag wranglers calling this concept "canonicals"), which once we mark as canonical in the archive, folks can filter by those tags when they're reading works in the archive. I'm not an official wrangler team lead or committee chair or anything special, btw, I'm just an everyday regular ol' tag wrangler (though I did volunteer to pay extra-special attention to the Star Wars fandoms, which I've blathered about here before, LOL). But folks have been asking me what I'm doing, so I wanted to post this. If you're interested in volunteering as a wrangler, or in any other capacity with the AO3 (or the OTW)? Oh, that would be so cool, and here's the page with more info about volunteering. We don't delete tags, and we don't place new tags on authors' works. Here are some official explanations of what tag wranglers do, and what authors can do with tags: Tags (Wuzzles) ExplainedArchive of Our Own Terms of Service FAQ: Tag WranglingI've been wrangling in the fandoms bin, personally... trying to make sure that all of the fandom tags which are part of Yuletide are wrangled by the 25th so they'll show up in filtering lists. Each fandom tag has to be associated with a specific Media (TV Shows, Movies, Books & Literature, etc etc etc), and then wrangled. (Side note: You wouldn't believe the number of different ways people convey the same fandom sometimes... let me see, how to explain without an actual example... "Peas and Carrots" and "Peas and Carrots (TV)" and "Peas & Carrots" and "Peas n Carrots" and "Carrots" and "Carrots (tv miniseries)" may all be the same TV show, but "Carrots: Reborn (2009)" might be a completely different movie from the TV show by the same name, and some movie fans may tag their works based on the movie as simply "Carrots"... fandom is infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and we each call our toys by different names sometimes. :-) And the archive does not yet have some of the disambiguation and metatagging functionality that ought to make it easier to sort out our Peas from our Carrots, and also possibly to find Vegetables. All hail the coders and testers, because OMG you are all awesome!) In case you were wondering: No, tag wranglers don't get to see Yuletide stories before anyone else. We see the same "Mystery Work" that y'all see. We get virtual steampunk goggles when we sign up to be tag wranglers, but we don't get to peek into Yuletide presents early as a benefit of volunteering. Right now, there are approximately 80 tag wranglers, who are a subgroup within Accessibility, Design, & Technology. Anyone can see the rapidly-growing size of the archive... there are some amazing stats covering the past few months in the latest AD&T meeting notes in the News section. Right now? This is the archive as a whole: * fandoms: 4420 to date * works: 32989 to date * people: 4100 to date And this is Yuletide: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide/collectionsAt the moment, there are 2246 works in Yuletide, and another 73 in Yuletide Madness so far, with something roughly over 1400 fandoms represented, and it's still increasing as folks write pinch-hits and Treats for the Madness until the stories will all be made viewable on December 25th. ZOMG THIS IS SO AMAZING. But ZOMG it's HUGE. We've been concentrating on the fandoms, but the characters, pairings and freeforms bins are ever-increasing. Hang in there, fellow wranglers!! ETA: (The interface we use for tag wrangling doesn't allow us to delete tags, and also, it's against our purpose and philosophy to do so. However, there is an automatic process on the server which removes tags from the database which are not associated with any fandom or any work at all, it's called "the rake" by wranglers; that's how typo-tags eventually go away without our intervention if an author removes them (which I totally needed to do myself as I was learning the author upload interface and made all kinds of typos! Denial Jackson, indeed!)) This entry was originally posted at http://elke-tanzer.dreamwidth.org/1021847.html. Please comment there using OpenID. Current Mood: busy |

Holiday Happiness to All And I do mean all, I know Christmas isn't everyone's holiday, it's hardly my holiday since I self-identify as an atheist, but there can't be any harm to wishing good things and happiness to everyone, right? Birthday happiness to my bestest wifey, eretria, too, since I may not get back online until after her natal day. My AO3 dashboard says I have a Mystery Story/Gift for Yuletide! Yays! To my dearest writer, I will do my best to read it the day after Christmas. It will be extra special on Boxing Day. Now, normally, this sort of sappiness gags me, but just for once. Joy to the World. The The Sing-Off live show sounded better than the three pre-recorded shows combined — and all three groups really did sound outstanding. [According to scuttlebutt, NBC pulled in a few sound people that are big in a cappella circles to make what was supposed to be a throw-away talent show a little shinier because, as it turns out, the ratings were surprisingly good for the relatively small price tag attached.] And can I just say: What a nice, feel good show! With the sole exception of Noteworthy's so-obvious-everyone's-remarking-on-it entitlement issues, all of the groups genuinely seemed to be having a good time and seemed to be genuinely supportive of each other, complete with rounds of hugs. In any case, I think everyone going into the live show pretty much knew NOTA was going to be crowned. I called them the winners during the opening night, in large part because they do Latin-flavored pop very well, they were better than most of the other groups on the stage, and a lot of their weaknesses can be overcome via technology in the recording booth and improvements in their stage show for live performances. And unlike some people on the NBC boards (and a couple of other chat boards I've poked my nose into), I think NOTA won the popular vote fair and square for those reasons. (Note to my geography-challenged fellow Americans on the various chat boards I've poked my nose into: Puerto Rico is a protectorate of the United States, which means that Puerto Ricans are Americans citizens, which also means that the members of NOTA are Americans. They are not "foreigners", nor are they "illegals", nor do they need "green cards". In short: Die in a fire, you racist asswipes.) I definitely didn't get the impression that the Tufts Beelzebubs (My homies came in second! Go 'Bubs!) were in the least bit shocked that the NOTA won. Besides, 'Bubs (and Voices of Lee) would've been looking at a fuckload of headdaches if they won the Sony contract (they were planning to split the money if they won). Does it go to the group that performed on stage? The a cappella groups as a student organizations where the membership changes year in and year out? To the universities these groups are associated with? So, not only do I think the right group won on talent, I would also say that the right group won on "ease of dealing with the legal world of Sony for the recording contract". As a bonus, both the 'Bubs and Voices of Lee got a fantastic shot in the arm publicity-wise and financially, since a lot of people were on the boards asking for CD recommendations. Both groups will be fine, In other news, I was shocked to spot celebrities in the audience:
- Harry Connick Jr.
- Masi Oka (aka Hiro of Heroes). As it turns out was the musical director of Brown University's all-male a cappella group The Bear Necessities when he was an undergrad student at Brown. I don't know why that makes me happy to know, but it does.
- Jack Black. Or at least someone who looked a lot like him.
- Peter Gallaggher of The OC. Turns out that he's a Tufts Beelzebubs alumni, which explains why he was sitting in the 'Bubs cheering section. Heh.
I also saw that the SoCals stuck around, and were clapping and cheering for the three finalists in the audience, which was really nice to see. While there were parts of last night's show that I did fast-forward through (thank you DVR!), there was plenty I watched. Put me on the list of people who'd like to see this show pop up again next year. In the meantime, here's a video capture from the Sing-Off of the 'Bubs singing their melody of The Who from the second night: This entry was originally posted at http://liz-marcs.dreamwidth.org/386629.html. Greetings from...here! Well, we're in VA* now. We got in just fine after just missing what's being called the Blizzard of 09. There's snow everywhere and it's very pretty. And cold. Really fucking cold. In spite of that, we had the window open for a while last night, Nancy's cousin keeps the house pretty warm and between the forced air heat and a massive hot flash, I was burning up.
I've actually been writing, mostly poking at "A Friend of the Devil."
Not much else to say. Hope all of you are doing well!
*Near DC. And while I would have loved to arrange some kind of meet up with those of you on my flist who live in the area, for a lot of complicated reasons, it's really not possible this time around. |

Yuletide pinch hitting! http://astolat.livejournal.com/215730.html Hey guys, urgent! With the huge increase in membership this year, we have a corresponding increase in last-minute pinch hits left to go out, and thanks to a new exciting Yahoogroups snafu, the original list has been silenced at the worst possible time. D: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you are by any chance up for doing any pinch hitting, join the new pinch hitters list: Send a blank email to yuletidepinchhitters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. To activate your subscription, just reply to the confirmation message you receive from the group. Or if you have a Yahoo! account, you can join at the group website! There are some pinch hits sent there already but we are holding off on more until we get more people on board. Please pass this along on journals, twitter, etc! ♥ *flails, runs back to code* You can also read this entry on Dreamwidth ( comments) |

Winter Solstice Happy Solstice! Blessed Yule, and all that sort of thing. Today I celebrated by giving gifts of food (the results of my baking this weekend) to various co-workers. Actually I had planned to do it today because tomorrow is when people start taking off for their vacations and today just so happened to be the Solstice but we're going to pretend like I planned to do it this way the whole time. Things given out: Apple butter crumble Gingerbread (of the bready texture, not the cookie kind) Blondies Fudgey bars Hot chocolate onna stick People seemed happy to get a little unexpected something. I was certainly happy to indulge my love of baking, so really it all works out in the end. Current Mood: chipper |

Happy Solstice! xposted to IJ and LJAccording to the Weather Underground, here where I live we had 9 hours and 29 minutes of sunlight today. Tomorrow we'll have just two seconds more. There's a slim crescent moon and after a rainy day the sky is clearing and the stars are coming out. I've been taking a little break from fandom and the journals, spending my time writing my never-ending Teyla story (almost 35,000 words at the moment, with more to tell; my god, I love Teyla and I have so much to say about her!) and running all kinds of errands that have unexpectedly cropped up. However, darling Tex is holding her Casa McShep festival till January 1, 2010, so I did post a little story over there, The White Island. Other than that, I plan to remain away for a bit longer. I feel I just got too caught up in some stuff and that's unlike me. At least, I think it's unlike me, but who the hell knows. I do know that I'm missing wonderful stuff, but I'll catch up eventually. Thank god for the SGA Newsletter. So. Six years ago, the final chapter of The Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King, was released. Eight years ago, the first movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, was released. And ten years ago, principal photography had begun. I note these dates because six years, the very night The Return of the King came out, my husband was hospitalized and I was crazy with fear. He had a long, hard recovery; in some ways he will never recover. I joke that I've had three husbands: before, during, and after the experience -- and fortunately, I like the "after" version of him quite a lot. But this time of year remains difficult for us. Even though good things have happened since (we found him better doctors, I got a much better job, we moved to a beautiful place), during this dark time of the year I get afraid. I cry more easily and more often, and everything feels tender, almost sore. I'm always so glad when the holidays are over and the new year has begun; I feel more hopeful for the future then. I also mention those dates because The Lord of the Rings is inextricably bound up in my memories of the bad days. I've said this before and I'm sure I'll say it again, but the Lord of the Rings books, movies, and fandom saved me. All you Lotrips folks kept me going. Writers and artists and readers, people I met in RL and those I didn't: I am so grateful to you. Thank you for helping me through those dark and sad days. Here's a song I think is fitting: Hope for the Hopeless, by The Frenzy (at Sendspace). |

As it turns out, I'm NOT a wimp... I woke up this morning with my lower back going into full-on bitch mode at me. I of course blame this on the Plow Snot that had been dumped at the end of my driveway that came up to — OhSweetJeezus — my chest. Now, I admit I be short (5-feet, 1-inch in my stocking feet to be precise), but that's a fuckload of snow. Even in snow that wasn't pushed into a tiny mount of Plow Snot, it came up to my knees, which is roughly 16 inches (I have long legs for my shortness). I figure...drifting snow. And I'm being a baby about this (I mean literally, because I was whining the entire time I cut through the Plow Snot just so I could see my car, let alone reach it.) Thanks to my local paper, I can now officially say that I was not being a baby. My town got whammed with 14 inches of snow. So there. And my lower back is still in full-on bitch mode, although giving myself a nice big stretch seems to make it happy and calm it down for an hour or two. In other news, Sing-Off Live Finale Tonight! Go Beelzebubs! Okay, not a chance in hell you're gonna win, but I'll be happy if you beat Voice of Lee, if only because their fans over on the NBC community are kind of ass-hatty. [Side note: Stay the hell away from from the NBC boards for this show if you want to prevent cranial trauma by head-desk. The FAIL is great there. And I mean FAIL on a scale that I never thought I'd witness this side of a newspaper comments section.] This entry was originally posted at http://liz-marcs.dreamwidth.org/386310.html. randomly twitching Holidays are engineered to make me feel inadequate, angry, and anxious. It's an awful sort of amorphous anxiety that you can't do anything about, because it's not based on anything real. I do not like this one bit. Oh, yes, and I don't want to go to dinner at my stepsister's on Christmas Eve. I really, really, really do not want to. She's a lovely person and her husband can actually out-do me on the silence front, I like her kids, I have no problem with dogs and cats, and I just don't want to goooooooooooo. I want someone to pay me to be a hermit. Plus, sleep would be nice. Really nice. Then my brain would work again and I would, say, remember that the car won't shift out of park without my foot on the brake. Ten minutes I spent thinking the tranny had quit out of the blue. Good notes in an otherwise crummy week: I got a nice story for SGA Santa and got mine turned in before deadline and I uploaded my Yuletide effort (after fighting with AO3's interface). So I'm caught up except for the Apocabigbang fic I haven't even outlined. Which may be the first thing I ever default on; I don't know. I've got enough GT&T written to post if I can scrounge a beta up. I'll do that after Christmas. It's not really as much as I'd meant to finish for this part, but it's a decent spot to break it and I want to get something up before the end of the year. God, I really want this stupid holiday to be over this year. This entry was originally posted at http://auburn.dreamwidth.org/232599.html. where there are comments. Posted via mobile email On a lighter note: I'm currently lying propped up on the couch, reading 'Cat on the Edge'. One of my cats just hopped up proprietarily onto my lap (blocking the paperback, btw), proceeded to belch dry kibble-breath into my face and then gave my chin a thorough bath. Ah, such are the true expressions of feline love... This entry was originally posted at http://thdancingferret.dreamwidth.org/1007.html. |
